You’re A Dirty Boy!!

Why is it that my spiders are almost always derelict in appearance? Everywhere else photographers have these beautifully clean Jumpers, not a spec of dirt on them. Do the photographers give them a hot bath and meal before the shoot or something?? A joking and frustration aside, New Mexico has some dirty little jumpers. I am sure it is due to the fact I live next to White Sands National Monument and we get 50 mph winds this time of year but still, shouldn’t this spiders take a little pride in cleaning themselves once in a while ;o)? If anyone has any suggestions on how to maybe clean these spiders I would love to hear it. Not sure if my Rocket Blower would take care of it but I doubt that would work without sending the poor thing flying through the air. Maybe an eye dropper, just one or two drops to knock some dust off the old chap? Or is this a new style, the vagrant look and I should just go with it understanding that in time they will outgrow it, it’s just the typical teenager spider rebelling and embarrassing his/her mom and pop spider? Send me a contact and let me know what you think.

The Wonders or Frustrations of Post Processing – Offering too many choices!

Today I thought I would try some new and really cool software. I found myself on sensory overload when trying to pick the finished results I liked the best. There were just too many option and cool features to work with. Everyone in the family had different multiple favorites too. After several hours of post processing I found myself not only mentally exhausted but extremely frustrated too!

I decided the best way to cure my frustration was to share it! Misery loves company, ya know!

So first let start off by looking at the original:

Original Roses

First post processing playing with Boken. This one has motion boken.

Motion Boken

Second post processing attempt,

Xfactor Motion Boken

Third post processing attempt, still maintaining my sanity at this point. This is a layer that makes it look like the image was taken with the fabulous Zeiss Lens at f5.6. I had at my disposal Canon, Nikkor, Zeiss layers to choose from which was really hard!

A layer duplicating an image taken with a Zeiss lens

Here is the fourth attempt which I think is my favorite. I have never been a fan of selective color and this Boken allows you to desaturate an area (instead of B&W) while leaving the focus area is crisp vibrant color. Finally a way to do “selective color” without going B&W to produce a very nice image that really pops.

An alternative to B&W selective color

One last play with Boken before I move on to artist digital painting and sketches.
Hard crop

At this point I had to get away from the machine and cook dinner. I think that may have been a mistake as a new monster came back. I have never been a fan of taking a picture and turning it into digital art. I am not sure if that opinion changed today or not. I must say I can see when the application might have a cool place in post processing but I don’t think I would want to use it daily.

I started with exploring pastel brushes. I liked the small brush impressionest layer.

Small brush impressionist

Then I tried the colored pencil with edge boost since I always like shading when I was drawing. At this point I was starting to feel like Goldilocks.

Colored pencil edge boost

At this point I am starting to lose it but I press on to try what watercolors would look like with these vibrant colors.

Vibrant watercolor processing

Now I think it is official and I offer the proof with this latest processing, especially since I like it!

Comic roses post processing

The question is now, which one do you like? Does one stand out to you or do you like a few different ones?

White Sands Balloon Invitational 2010

Off and away

For the first time in 6 years I actually planned and got everyone out of the house on time to make it to the White Sands Balloon Invitational launch. Trying to get an 8 and 6 yr old up at 5am, get them dressed and out the door was nothing short of a miracle. I thought for sure they would fall back to sleep on our drive to White Sands but I think they too were too excited to return back to dreamland.

Balloon getting ready to launch

We got to the park entrance by 6:15 only to find a huge line waiting to get into the park (believe it or not, the park doesn’t open until 6am). After waiting in line for 30 minutes we got close enough to see the ticket booth. A park ranger was asking people if they had season passes as they did not need to wait in line and could drive right through. Lucky for us we purchase a season pass yearly!! This time saver would allow us to see the launch!

Balloon lift off

We still had to park a long way away from the launch site and time was ticking. I got my gear together and everyone was ready to head off on our hike to the launch site. Luck was on our side once again, weather conditions caused a delay in the launch. As we approached the launch site the balloon were just starting the fans up.

Heat added to cool air

I never really considered how a balloon got up in the air before. I was shocked at how many people it took on a team to get a balloon launched. I had no idea the balloon first needed to be filled with air by giant fans. Once the balloon has been filled with enough air then comes the fire. After about 10-12 blasts of this super-hot flame the balloon starts to lift off the ground and the basket can be set upright. With a crew of about 6-8 people holding the basket tethered with ropes, the pilot blasts more flames into the balloon. A few minutes later with the clearance of the launch official (not sure their actual title- but they are the ones giving the okay for the balloons to launch) the balloon is off for a wonderful but short ride this year. Due to the winds the balloons could only stay up for about 10 minutes.

The boys favorite

Sadly each year it seems less and less balloons are attending the invitational at the White Sands as well as the launch sites in town. This year it also appeared that less and less people attended the event to watch the balloons as well. Perhaps the economy is to blame for the decrease in balloons and spectators, I don’t know. I did noticed that the balloons this year had sponsors. Perhaps I have never noticed before (which I doubt) or the signs on the balloon baskets were new. If more businesses stepped forward to sponsor a balloon it’s possible more balloon pilots might come to future events. To get more spectators the White Sands National Monument should consider reducing the fee to a per car (rather than person) entry fee. This reduction would also help traffic to move faster through the gate instead of causing a traffic game on the highway getting entry into the park. It would also help more families in town be able to afford going. Charging for each individual person will preclude many local residents from attending.

Fun with a fisheye

People need work together to insure events like the White Sands Balloon Invitational continue on for future generations to enjoy. Encouraging more Balloon pilots to come will increase the number of spectators. Could we get more balloons to attend our event if it was scheduled the weekend before Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta? This way people traveling from other states can schedule coming to our event too? Not sure if this would draw more balloon or not but obviously something needs to change before this event becomes one of those “remember when” stories we have to tell our children.

Learning Something New Everyday

I think the thing I love the most about macro photography is the endless journey of learning. Not only do you learn about different species but often their behavior. You get to observe them and explore what, when and why.

Today that opportunity hit once again. My very first mantis I ever captured on film was Stagmomantis limbata. This summer I kept going up to the spot I found my first mantis hoping to find another of this species. The last month and a half at our house we have been visited by many mantises. One night we had 50 between our front and back door. I thought I died and went to heaven!

The species visiting our front door I assumed was some different genus from Stagmomantis and I would learn later today just how wrong this assumption was to be. The reason I made this assumption was due to the three simple eyes between the compound eyes.

Here is a Stagmomantis, according to one expert in the field possibly Stagmomantis californica:
Stagmomantis

Here is a pregnant Stagmomantis I found this weekend. Sadly she died and I am guessing due to the wound that you see in the picture.
Female Stagmomantis

Now compare the above picture with the first. Can you see any simple eyes on top of her head? I sure could not. It wasn’t until I cropped the picture below did I barely notice them at all. Thanks to David Ferguson telling me yes indeed the females have them but due to their size not noticeable unless you look hard enough.

Female Stagmomantis small simple eyes

Another picture of the male Stagmomantis
Male Stagmomantis simple eyes

All this time I thought I was dealing with two different types of mantises. They might be different species but they are the same genus. Currently I am trying to gather more information for id purposes but we are dealing with either Stagmomantis limbata or Stagmomantis californica.

Another difference between male and female of this genus are the wings. The males can fly and have long wings that extend to the tip of their abdomen while the females have short wings and cannot fly or cannot fly well or far. The females wings are very short and the females are much larger than the male.

As I stated earlier the female Stagmomantis died and sadly did so prior to releasing her eggs. My husband brought her home and we will see if it is possible for the eggs to be protected enough inside the dead mantis to survive and hatch. I will update the article in Spring and hope to report our experiment to be a success!

Wonderful Spiders

I used to be horribly frightened of spiders. I would scream for my husband to come in to kill them. I couldn’t even get close enough to stomp on one myself. I bought bug spray by the gallon, you know the indoor/outdoor kind? Bugs, spiders and every other creepy crawly scared the heck out of me.

Over the last 2 years I have come to understand bugs and spiders. Ignorance and horror flicks are what breed fear in us. We cannot rely on Hollywood, urban legends and wives tales when judging our world around us. Once we understand bugs and spiders and the wonderful role they play in our lives there is less fear. Granted I pick up many bugs but spiders well I still fear them a little more than I should. I can get close to them but if they jump on me or run up my shirt like one did while I was photographing him, I still scream like a girl. One day though I am sure I will be picking them up. It is all a matter of taking baby steps to overcome years of misunderstanding and irrational fears.

Of all the spiders I think I would have to say Wolf spiders are my favorite. The come in all different sizes and colors. They have wonderful big eyes and when you look into them you have to wonder what intelligence is there. This spiders seem to know when you mean them no harm and when they should be running. If you talk to them while photographing them they all seem to pose for you. They seem to study you as much as you study them. Take a moment to stop and look at a spider instead of screaming it away. You might be surprised at what you really see.

The other reason I love wolfies is because the female spider is the ultimate wondermom! This mom carries her egg sac filled with hundreds of eggs with her wherever she goes for about 3 weeks. Where her spiderlings hatch she then carries every one of them on her back for another 3 weeks or until their first molt. Can you imagine carrying the eggs and young on your back for 6 weeks? Not only that but many wolfies do this two times in their very short life.

Here is the picture of the proud mom:
Good Mother

I love the color and pattern of this wolfie. He was 3” long from front to back leg. Just beautiful!
Pretty Wolfie

This is my other favorite wolfie. He was the first spider I used my mp-e on to get real detailed eye pattern shots. Funny thing is, he was also the biggest wolfie I had ever encountered too. Why would I pick such a big boy to try out a lens that you can only use a few inches away from your subject lol!!
Wolfie Eye Pattern

Here is a full shot of that gray beauty.
Amazing creature

One thing I have learned about spiders through all of this is they are nothing like Hollywood has shown us. They will not go flying through the air to jump on your head and suck out your brain. They are more scared of you then you are them. They do not hunt you down to bite you and cause you pain. They bite out of fear and as a last resort.

“Fear always springs from ignorance.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Natural Light

I think buying a flash does something to your brain. All of a sudden you feel you cannot do anything without your flash. There must be some kind of drug that acts upon contact that wipes out any thought of using available light instead of flash.

Well recently while photographing this dandelion:
Dandelion Natural Light

I was unhappy with all the results using the flash. You could see too much of the background which was not pretty. Then it hit me like a brick, duh what about natural light? I used to only use natural light before I bought a flash and why wasn’t I doing it now. Just because I have a flash doesn’t mean I have to use it. Now for the last 2 weeks I have been experimenting with natural light from flowers to children. While I wish my Canon 40D did not have so much noise at 1600 (I wish it was a little less) I like the textured effect noise adds to the image. It makes the image look dream like especially when used on children.

The pictures below are of the extremely adorable daughter of our friends. Izzy is 3 yrs old and she loves having her picture taken. I think she might grow up to be a model.

This one is my favorite. I love the blowing seeds captured in this image:

So remember, don’t let the flash drug affect your creativity. Don’t forget the soft colors you can get from using available natural light. Don’t be afraid to set your ISO and aperture high. Just be creative and have fun experimenting with the light provided by nature.

Be on the lookout for more photos using natural light. I have many I still have to process! Remember to step away from the TV and housework for a few hours and get shooting!

New Web Address!!

I am excited to announce my new web address http://www.nmbugs.com

It is so hard to think of website names that are easy for people to remember. People could not pronounce Sirius or spell it also Imagery appeared to perplex people as well. I just could not take it anymore and decided to come up with the easiest name possible for people. The names I tried were either taken or considered “premium” names which means you pay a “premium” price. The one domain I considered was a premium domain with the asking price of “only” $500.00!! I just couldn’t bring myself to pay that fee!

I thought NMbugs would good since most of my art is that of insects and arachnids which are found all over NM. Bugs are not the only thing I photograph though in the summer time they are a major focus of my work. As people will see as I better update my site (trying to get better about it) that I will have beautiful flowers and many other subjects I like to photograph. I chose NMbugs because it is easy to remember but that does not mean all you will find here are bugs.

I hope people will enjoy the new site and the images I will share here. As for the image posted here, there is an interesting story behind it to which I am very proud. You will see many pictures of dragonflies on the web but many of these beautiful images are taken with a telephoto. What you see here is a picture taken with a special lens called the mp-e which is a dedicated macro. This means you can only do macro with this lens. This is unlike other macro lenses like the Canon 100L which can be used for portraits, landscapes etc. The mp-e requires you be within inches of the subject. Some people who have successfully captured a dragonfly with the mp-e will go out early in the morning when it is cold and the dragonfly really cannot get away. Others have good luck and patience like me.

It took me weeks to get this picture. I would go out each day and take some pictures and talk to the dragonflies. I know talking to insects sounds off but I do think they can tell by our tone whether we mean them harm or not. Over those weeks these fascinating creatures would allow me to get just a little bit closer. After getting several lovely shots with my Canon 100L I decided to try the mp-e. To my surprise a couple of this beauties allowed me to get within mp-e range. I was so happy and so proud I could not stop smiling. I had begged hubby for months for a telephoto just so I can shoot these creatures. He would reply how I would be able to do it without one and I would reply “yeah, right”. He had more faith in me than I had in myself. I am so happy that he did not cave to my requests after all! I am really ecstatic that this picture is here to announce the launch of my new site.

Now I have to come up with an easy to remember email address so people don’t get confused with Racquel@…lol.

Sun Spider

Sun Spiders are not real spiders. They are of the class Arachnida like ticks and scorpions but are not spiders. This specimen was approx 3″ total length.

Jumper

My son found this spider yesterday. I love jumping spiders. They look like little puppy dogs! Such big eyes for a spider only 5mm in size.
